About BrisbaneLocated in south-east Queensland, Brisbane is situated 25km upstream from the mouth of the Brisbane River. The central business district features a number of public parks and squares, the heart of the city being the two-block Queen Street Mall, a pedestrian shopping precinct. The city centre is connected by bridge or cross-river ferry to South Brisbane and the Cultural Centre which features the Performing Arts Complex, with its four major performance spaces, the Queensland Art Gallery, the Queensland Museum and the State Library of Queensland. It is also the stopping off point for the Southbank Parklands: 16 hectares of parks, playgrounds, restaurants, and an artificial sandy beach (patrolled), all set in lush tropical gardens. For visitors arriving by bus, train or airport shuttle, the Brisbane Transit Centre is 500 metres from the city centre, and connected to the city's extensive suburban rail and bus network. The airport is located 15 kms north of the city. Want to know whether to bring your bathing suit or an overcoat? Conference ReceptionOn the Friday night you are all invited to a champagne reception at the University of Queensland Art Gallery, where you will have a chance to mingle and chat over light refreshments. As well as viewing the University's fascinating collection of contemporary art, we hope you will enjoy some short artistic presentations from members of the School of English, Media Studies and Art History's postgraduate Creative Writing program. The cost of the reception is included in your registration fee, and all are welcome. On the Saturday night we will move to the "Red Room", a new, on-campus pub with stylish interior and picturesque views of the lakes. There will be a fully catered barbeque, with tea, coffee and fruit juice, and we are organising a small bar-tab. Vegetarian burgers will be available. The cost is $15.00. In previous years the Saturday night function has been greatly enjoyed, and as the venue is within walking distance of the conference, we hope you will all take the opportunity to relax and party after two days of conference going. There is a place to register for the function on the registration form, but if you have already registered, we can still add you to the list when you sign in to the conference. Of course, we would like as accurate numbers as soon as possible for catering purposes. You can find the registration form here. |
