Louise Wilson, "Embryonic Stem Cell Research Debates"

This paper will look at print media representations of embryonic stem cell research debates, applying Stuart Hall's concept of primary definers while taking into account critiques of Hall's work. Very broadly, Hall argues that institutional sources which routinely supply news items to the media become the primary voice in defining how an issue will be represented. The bioethical debates circulating around embryonic stem cell research are sites of frantic contestation. This paper seeks to identify the primary definers, if any, within this debate. It will also address the limitations of this perspective and consider the usefulness of this approach in understanding media representations of bioethical discourse.

Biography: Louise Wilson has a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Communication and Cultural Studies from the University of Queensland.
