The School of English, Media Studies and Art History (EMSAH) is a world leading research intensive school within the Faculty of Arts. It pursues research in:

  • literary studies
  • cultural studies
  • media and communication
  • creative writing
  • theatre
  • museology
  • digital media
  • film and television
  • curatorship
  • and the history of art from the Renaissance to the contemporary.

The School’s expert academics and creative practitioners have outstanding scholarly reputations, and are active in fostering research and industry links with government and community partners nationally and internationally.

In 2012, both the QS World University Rankings Survey and Excellence in Research for Australia survey ranked EMSAH in the top three departments of its kind in Australia, while research outputs in Literary Studies, Cultural Studies, and Communication and Media Studies were identified as amongst the best in the world.  

EMSAH provides substantial Research Higher Degree supervision of students working across a diverse range of disciplinary areas, as well as offering three postgraduate coursework programs in Museum Studies, Science Communication, and Writing, Editing and Publishing.

EMSAH’s globally oriented research environment is additionally supported by its annual hosting of three Visiting Professorships and Scholarships in Visual Culture, English Literature, and Shakespeare Studies.
