Components
Essay Topics will be distributed in lectures and, together with assessment criteria, will be added to the relevant linked assignment pages below.

Assignment 1:
750 word essay, due on Friday, 5 Sep; 4:30pm

Assignment 2:
1200-1500 word essay, due on Friday, 31 Oct; 4:30pm

End of term exam:
Date to be advised. It is your responsibility to check My-SInet for changes--permission to sit the exam outside the specified time can be allowed only under extraordinary circumstances.

Tutorial Participation and Attendance:
The fact that attendance and participation attract 20% of your final grade reflects their importance. In tutorials, which are compulsory, you will become active participants in your own learning. For this to work well, you will come to class ready to discuss your reading and the lectures, and to share your ideas and to respond to those of others. The tutorial guides will help to focus, but not limit, discussion.

Basic essay skills

All assessment in this course will assume you are familiar with the basics of essay writing, and can:

  • write clear and intelligible statements,
  • use the grammatical conventions of formal essay style,
  • use the standard punctuation marks, and
  • construct an argument.
If you are not sure of your abilities in any of these areas, you'll find a large amount of helpful material linked through the on-line writing resources section of the School website.

How to present and submit your assignments

The School of English, Media Studies and Art History uses MLA style, and you are expected to use this for all your assignments.  A Style Sheet summarising MLA style and giving examples to use is available for free outside the School Office on the fourth floor of the Michie building.

All assignments should be submitted using the School Cover Sheet, which is also available from outside the School Office. You should get a copy of this early, and make yourself familiar with the general guidelines for submitting assignments you will find on the back of it.  You can also see these guidelines on the "Presentation and submission of assignments" page on the School website.  From this page, or from this link, you can also download a copy of the Cover Sheet in MS Word format, to cut and paste into and print off with your assignment.
